I really didn’t like the idea of leaving Joanna alone in her house — it felt awfully isolated, even though she assured me that her closest neighbor was less than five minutes away — but I knew I didn’t have much say in the matter. She kept reiterating that she was fine, and I had to accept her words at face value. Besides, she’d promised she would call Eleanor if she started to feel at all strange. There wasn’t much else I — or Jake — could do.

So, I drove back to our house with him in the passenger seat of my little green Fiat and an uncomfortable silence stretching between us. I honestly didn’t know what to say. Whatever had clapped back at Joanna hadn’t affected me, for whatever reason. In my mind, that meant I needed to keep trying…but I had a feeling Jake had a very different opinion on the matter.

I pulled into the garage and parked my car next to his Wrangler, and we got out and went inside. By that point, it was almost noon, around time to think about scrounging some lunch. I wasn’t hungry, though.

He went to the pantry and got out the little plastic bin that held Taffy’s dog food, and scooped some into her bowl. She’d already followed us into the kitchen, knowing it was time for us to be putting together our own meal, and looked very disappointed as Jake instead leaned against the counter and sent me a searching look.

“I think you need to let it alone.”

“Jake, nothing happened to me.”

“This time.”

Well, that comment was nothing more than the truth, so I couldn’t think of a good way to contradict him. Yes, I was fine. That didn’t mean I would be the next time.

“Leftovers for lunch?” I suggested, hoping I could distract him with food.

I should have known better. His brows drew together, and he said, “I think we need to talk to Connor.”

Obviously, Jake wasn’t going to let it go. I honestly didn’t know why I was so dead set on keeping my brother out of the situation, except that it seemed to me if the Wilcox primus was brought into our mess, then he’d feel compelled to reach out to the Freeman prima, and I could see the whole thing spiraling out of control after that.

“What could Connor do, really?” I asked. “He’s not a weather-worker. Getting him involved would just escalate everything.”

“You don’t know that,” Jake replied. “And besides, he and Angela working together might be able to make this whole thing go away. I was willing to let you and Joanna try first, just because you two are the clan’s weather witches, and it made a lot of sense to have you handle it. But obviously, that didn’t work so well, so it’s probably time to try something else.”

I wished I could argue with him. Problem was, he had a point. Neither Connor nor Angela was a weather-worker, but when the two of them combined their powers, they could do almost anything.
